Danny and the Deep Blue Sea casting call, director announcement

IMMEDIATE CASTING OPPORTUNITY!

We’re taking materials through Jan. 23, 2026, for Danny and the Deep Blue Sea casting consideration. This drama by John Patrick Shanley plays Straz Center’s Shimberg Playhouse May 6-31, 2026. This deadline cannot be held over.

Both roles in the show are open. We specifically seek a man and a woman who read 40s but will consider performers who read late 30s to early 50s. It is important to note that these characters have an edge, some grit, chips on their respective shoulders; they’ve been hurt and are survivors in their own f*cked-up ways. This show is a far cry from a  quirky off-kilter Hallmark rom-com.

“…the play is the equivalent of sitting at ringside watching a prize fight that concludes in a loving embrace. – New York Times.

Performers must be available for rehearsals (weeknights, weekend days) starting Apr. 7, 2026, and reside in the Tampa Bay area or have their own local housing. These roles are paid and intended for non-union actors due to the current funding crisis by way of the elimination of state and federal arts grants, but we may consider AEA performers using the new lowest-level SAE contract (20 hours/5 days a week of rehearsal, 4 performances a week). We cannot provide housing, travel, or per diem and the contract terms are non-negotiable.

Interested actors should send a link (YouTube, Vimeo, etc – NO FILE ATTACHMENTS OR DOWNLOADS) to a dramatic contemporary monologue along with a single pdf file containing both headshot and resume (no separate doc/jpg or pdf/png combos) with a filename that matches your name (eg, AubreyPlaza.pdf or Wade-Wilson.pdf) to artisticdirector@jobsitetheater.org, including acknowledgment of the terms of the contract and a statement that you are available for it. If you have a link to a general performance reel you would also like to include, feel free.

Anyone needed for a callback will be notified by email, so please add jobsitetheater.org to your whitelist. The callback is currently scheduled for Mon., Feb. 2, and will consist of cold readings. Materials must be received no later than Jan. 23, 2026, at 10pm.
