Othello casting

We are in the early phases of casting for Othello, playing the Straz Center Jan. 9 – Feb. 3, 2019. There are several things to consider before submitting your interest. Please carefully check over all points and make sure that you can commit to all terms before getting in contact with us:

  • This show rehearses weeknights Tu-Th 6:30-10:30p and both weekend days (typically 2-6 on Sa. and 11-3 on Su.) beginning approximately Dec. 4 (some time that week). As this show rehearses across the holiday season it is imperative that all interested performers understand that we cannot accept lengthy conflicts past the standard holidays of Christmas eve/day and New Year’s eve/day. We will provide those four days off, but if you are planning on being out of town the week between the two holidays or otherwise have significant holiday season conflicts/travel plans we will not be able to accommodate that.
  • In addition to the standard performance schedule (Th – Sa at 8p, Su at 4p) we will do somewhere between 3 and 9 weekday matinee performances at 10am for high schools. Performers must be available for all daytime shows. All performers will know for sure of any daytime performance by 30 days out from the anticipated date of the matinee. If we have not met a booking minimum by then we cancel the performance.
  • Othello has the option to extend for one additional week through Feb. 10 if sales warrant it. All performers must be available for that potential added week. Final determination of that week will be made by Jan. 21.

These are paid positions. We will consider local (Tampa Bay region) AEA and non-AEA performers. Jobsite works on a Special Appearance II contract but we CANNOT consider out of market performers as we cannot offer travel, housing, or per diem. All actors are paid weekly.

We are eager to begin interviewing actors immediately for the lead role of Othello, and are planning a series of small callbacks over the summer for that role and others in the show.

For the role of Othello we are specifically looking for an actor of any gender 30-50 years old in suitable physical shape to believably play an active member of the armed forces. This actor must be African/African-American or of African descent (Caribbean, Afro-latino, etc), North African (Amazigh, etc), Arab, of mixed ethnicities, or what some refer to as “ethnically ambiguous.” This is a dignified, career military person. Someone who effortlessly exhibits strength of character. Commanding but with a gentle spirit and huge heart. Equal parts soldier and lover. Fiercely intelligent but with enough trust and love in their heart to allow them to be manipulated. This actor needs enormous range: humor, romance, rage, remorse.

In addition to the role of Othello we are looking for 8-11 (TBD) other performers for all other roles in the show. We will consider actors of any gender, gender identity or expression for these roles, and we also strongly encourage performers with disabilities and/or performers of color to audition for all roles. We are actively looking to avoid a company comprised of a black Othello with an otherwise all-white cast. This production uses Shakespeare’s language but is set in a present-day context. The core conflict is not that this is a black man in an otherwise all-white world, but that he is a person of color in a position of power and command. We believe that Shakespeare’s stories are largely timeless, but feel an ethical and artistic responsibility to cast these plays in a way that reflects the world today.

  • Please go back to the top of this post and go over our requirements again. If you have a question about any of the items, please ask before submitting.
  • Attend the Tampa Unified Auditions on June 30 and perform a Shakespeare selection as one of your two pieces OR if you do not plan on attending Unifieds send an email to auditions AT jobsitetheater DOT org including a link (Google Drive, Vimeo, YouTube, Dropbox, etc — no embedded or attached files, please) with one Shakespeare monologue and a second contrasting monologue of your choice (any author, style, or period provided it contrasts your first choice) and a current headshot and resume. We encourage people to do a live audition over a taped one, the Unified auditions are a great way to be seen by all of the region’s professional theater companies at once.
  • All materials must be received by July 8. We do not accept materials by post.
  • Performers that we will need to see for a callback will be notified in writing by email no later than July 14. If you have not heard back from us by then we will not need to see more from you. Please check your spam/junk folders and be on the lookout for messages from @jobsitetheater.org.
